The Alpin F1 team announced on Tuesday that up-and-coming Oscar Piastri will be driving next season in place of Fernando Alonso, who is leaving for Aston Martin.
Earlier, the Formula 3 and Formula 2 champion had been promised a place in F1 for the 2023 season. The driver was expected to rejoice at this turnaround, but Piastri abruptly announced that he would not compete for Alpin.
“Without my consent, Alpin announced the contract signing. This is not true, I did not sign a contract and I will not pilot an Alpin car for the new season,” Piastri said.
The media reports that Oscar is in talks with McLaren, where he can replace Daniel Riccardo, so he does not want to move to Alpin.
